Nature Walks – The First Turtle of the Season

It seems a bit early early for our turtles to come out, especially since our weather is all over the place right now. But sure enough, I saw our first snapping turtle of the season out trying to get some sun. This guy is one of oldest residents in the area. It is rumored that he is over 100 years old. By the looks of it, he is still going strong too. I think he will be around for quite some time to come.

All we can do is to keep on moving on.

  1. Snapping turtles are one of my favorite creatures. We owned a house out in the country for nearly 15 years that had a large creek with pools of water where three ancient turtles lived. We had named them Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates had a shell that was about three feet around. I had never seen anything like it. We tried to keep them a secret and would kick people off the property who had come to fish or paddle the creek, as it was popular to hunt turtles. They were happy forest spirits.
